Fluorescents

Linear Fluorescents are the current workhorse of commercial lighting. Over the years this category has expanded enormously - and it continues today. Linear fluorescents are very energy efficient and because they are 'linear', they spread the light out suitably for office type spaces.

The most popular size currently is the 'T8', having replaced the once dominant 'T12', and not yet replaced by the newer 'T5'. This 'T' number describes the diameter of the tube in 1/8's of an inch, and is very important to getting the right product. Like HID's, all the lamps in this category must be matched by both type AND wattage to a specific ballast for proper operation and life. Even though many 'T8's and 'T12's are physically interchangeable, it can burn out both lamp and ballast pre-maturely if mis-applied.

There are also multiple color, wattage, brightness and length of life offerings in the more popular lengths (2', 3', and 4'). Color is expressed in two ways; in the older types with a color name (like cool white & warm white), and in the newer types by a Kelvin temperature (like 4100K & 3000K). Wattage can vary and the brightness will vary with it. Brightness is not only dependant on wattage though and can be effected by what is often called the 'series', typically noted as '700 'or '800' in most brands. Recently longer life versions have been made available as well. All of these topics will effect the price, except the color.
